    Movie:  Harriet
    Showtime: 8:00 pm, Castro Theatre
Meeting Time: 5:30 pm for dinner or 7:30 pm in the line outside the theater

About a dozen MAX members enjoyed January's MAX Friday Movie, "Just Mercy," on January 10th.  We've decided to offer another special movie night activity this month, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 20th.

Our show, “Harriet,” starts at 8 p.m. in the Castro Theater. The film is based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter and abolitionist, Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery and risked her life to lead others to freedom through the network of safehouses known as the Underground Railroad. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. The exemplary, Tony-winning Broadway actor Cynthia Erivo stars as Harriet Tubman.

Those who wish to eat together beforehand are invited to join us at 5:30 p.m. at Starbelly (3583 16th Street, in the Castro at the corner of Market St and 16th St).

Or if you prefer, meet us in the line that queues outside the theater (if there is a queue) or just outside the entrance to the theater, next to the theater’s ticket kiosk, between 7:30 to 7:45pm. Look for your event champion, Bruce, who will have a MAX shirt and sign.

IMPORTANT: To enter the theatre together and sit together as a group, please purchase a ticket before arriving at the theater.   Advance tickets may be purchased here When purchasing tickets, please be sure to select the Mon, Jan 20th 8:00 PM show.

Please RSVP on Meetup here to give the event champion, Bruce, an idea how big the group will be.

If you don't have a Meetup account or to receive any further updates, register for this event by clicking the REGISTER button on the left.

Join MAX for The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD theater broadcast of the George Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess.   The opera will be simulcast to the Century Theatre in in the Westfield San Francisco Centre on Saturday, February 1st, starting at 9:55 AM.

Porgy and Bess is an English-language opera filled with an embarrassment of rich melodies from the American songbook.  The songs just roll out one after another as this tragic love triangle plays out in the Catfish Row section of Charleston.  The story follows the attempts of a crippled street beggar to rescue Bess from Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and from Sportin' Life, her Happy Dust dealer.

Among the songs included in Porgy and Bess are:

    • Summertime
    • A Woman Is a Sometime Thing
    • My Man's Gone Now
    • I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'
    • Bess, You Is My Woman Now
    • Oh, I Can't Sit Down!
    • It Ain't Necessarily So
    • I Loves You, Porgy
    • A Red Headed Woman

The theatre is readily accessible from BART.  You can enter the Westfield Center directly from the Powell Street BART station.

We'll meet in the lobby of the Century Theatre on the 5th floor of the Westfield Centre by 9:30 AM to give everyone time to get any refreshments and get settled before show begins at 9:55 AM.  The opera runs three hours and twenty-five minutes.

After the opera, those interested can join us at The Rotunda restaurant in the nearby Neiman Marcus for a 1:45pm lunch (deposit required).  The Rotunda is a short 10-minute walk from the theatre.

For dues-paying members and their guests, we have reserved a block of 6 tickets midway back and left of center in the theatre.  The seats are F14 - F17 and G14 - G15.  You may view the seating chart for this theatre auditorium here.
