Join MAX to watch The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD theater broadcast of “Champion”, at the Century 9 Theater in the Westfield San Francisco Centre mall (on Market Street, off Powell Street).

The opera will be simulcast live from the New York Lincoln Center on Saturday, April 29th, starting at 9:55 AM.

Champion is based on the true story of bisexual boxer Emile Griffith.  In 1962 Emile was closeted.  After a homophobic slur from his opponent before a 1962 boxing match, Emile ended up killing his opponent in a flurry of blows during the match. He was cleared of wrongdoing and continued to compete.  However, the world was less forgiving thirty years later when he was outed after being severely assaulted outside a gay bar.  I kill a man and most people forgive me … I love a man … this makes me an evil person.”

The composer is Terence Blanchard, the jazz musician and composer whose Fire Shut Up in My Bones opera opened the Met’s 2021–22 season to universal acclaim.  Read more about the opera Champions here.

We'll meet in the lobby of the Century 9 Theatre on the 5th floor of the Westfield San Francisco Centre mall by 9:30 AM to give everyone time to get any refreshments and get settled before the show begins at 9:55 AM.  The opera will run two hours and fifty minutes with one intermission.

After the opera, those interested can join us at the nearby Burma Love restaurant for lunch (deposit required).  The Burma Love Downtown restaurant is a short 5-minute walk from the theatre.

We have reserved a block of 13 tickets.  We'll be sitting in seats F6 – F14 and G7 – G10.  You may view the seating chart for this performance here.

Opera Details: This production is the operatic retelling of the dramatic story of boxer Emile Griffith.  Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green stars as the closeted young hatmaker-turned-prizefighter, who rises from obscurity to become world champion and, in one of the great tragedies in sports history, kills his homophobic archrival in the ring.  The stellar cast that also features bass-baritone Eric Owens as Griffith’s older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past.  Soprano Latonia Moore is Emelda Griffith, the boxer’s estranged mother.  The composer is jazz musician and composer Terrence Blanchard.   Terence Blanchard has won six Grammy’s and has collaborated with Spike Lee on 17 films and three television projects.  Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.
