Bike Rental - Gay Bike Tour of Berkeley (September 19, 2026)

This is where you can rent a bike - for our Berkeley Gay Bike Tour on Saturday, Sept. 19. This is if you want to participate in the event but do NOT have your own bike. Cost to rent a bike is $35.

If you are renting a bike, arrive at the Berkeley Sport's Basement store (at 2727 Milvia St. in Berkeley) by 11:15 or 11:30 a.m. to pick up your bike and getting fitted. We will depart at 12 p.m. from in front of the store. The event itself is $10 (for our guide), and is in addition to the cost of renting a bike. You also can bring your bike on BART, and ride your bike quickly to our departure point - in which case, you DO NOT need to rent a bike here.

Please also bring some extra money if you want ice cream!

Bike Tour of Gay Berkeley (September 19, 2026)

Join event champion Bruce Cecil as we take a leisurely ride on bikes through Berkeley on Saturday, Sept. 19, to learn about gay history in this beautiful East Bay university city, then stop for ice cream at the end of our leisurely excursion.

We will depart at 12 p.m. from 2727 Milvia Street, in front of the Sport's Basement store. The tour will be led by public historian Steve Gere. If you bring your own bike, the event is $10 (for our guide). You can bring your bike on BART, and ride your bike quickly to our departure point.

Please also bring some extra money if you want ice cream!

In addition to the $10 cost for the tour, bike rental costs $35 for the day and pickup will be at our departure point, at Sports Basement in Berkeley, at 2727 Milvia Street.

No Refund after September 11.

The departure point is at 2727 Milvia Street is a short 12-minute walk from the Berkeley Ashby BART station (0.5 miles).

Berkeley is home of the University of Berkeley, but also is known for its activism, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, with hippies, protests against the Vietnam War, and Civil Rights protests. The gay liberation movement also was a part of the Berkeley picture.

Oakland Museum of California and Off the Grid Street Fair (October 09, 2026)

Join MAX SF as we visit Oakland Museum of California and Off the Grid Street Fair, held on the museum grounds, on Friday, Oct 9. We will meet as a group at the entrance to the museum at 6 p.m. sharp. Every Friday through to the end of October, the museum features a free evening of live music, interactive activities, food trucks, and exclusive late-night access to all museum galleries and special exhibitions. Price is $25 per ticket, refundable up until 10 days before the event, but no refund after that. The museum is open until 9 p.m. You can get to the museum via BART. The Lake Merritt BART Station is a quick 3-minute walk to the museum (1 block). Or the museum offers a $10 flat-rate parking in its garage (adjacent to the museum) until 10 pm. Bring money if you want to buy food at one of the food truck vendors at the fair. Walking Tour: Cow Hollow & Golden Gate Valley Library (October 17, 2026)

Join MAX for a custom walking tour focused on Cow Hollow. Spared destruction from the 1906 disaster, this area contains structures from nearly every decade since the 1860s. This tour illustrates the transformation of the district from a rural suburb to a full-fledged city neighborhood.

Take a casual tree-lined walk on historic Green Street with its array of architectural styles. View close up the 1861 Octagon House and the charming Allyne Park with dog walkers enjoying the cool morning air. Marvel at the rich terra cotta detailing of the branch library. Stroll past the historic Sherman House where opera greats performed, and celebrities like Johnny Carson and Barbra Streisand found privacy. Veer southward to the majestic Casebolt House (1865), which once dominated the landscape. See the only remaining natural spring still flowing in Cow Hollow, and climax your walk by viewing the unique Vedanta Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in the western world.

We will assemble at Golden Gate Valley Library Branch,1801 Green St. The whole tour will start promptly at 10:30 so please be on time. The tour will last about 2 hours and will end back where we started. Following the tour, all are welcome to join the group for an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant TBD. Price for the walking tour is $30 for Members and $30 for guests. Limited to 16, however, a waitlist will be provided for cancellations. No cancellation refunds after October 14.
