UPDATE: Venue Changed to AMC Kabuki 8 Due to APEC

Join MAX to watch The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD theater broadcast of
X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X”, at the AMC Kabuki 8 (at Post Street and Fillmore Street).
The opera will be simulcast live from the New York Lincoln Center on Saturday, November 18th, starting at 9:55 AM.

The opera sketches an outline of the short but eventful life of Malcolm X.  The opera’s narrative sketches the galvanic life and career of the controversial activist in a series of fast-moving vignettes which trace his trajectory from hate to love.

A groundbreaking and influential opera, with a score by composer Anthony Davis and a libretto by playwright Thulani Davis, X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X first premiered in 1986 at the New York City Opera.

This newly revised production, a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, Detroit Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Omaha, and Seattle Opera, first premiered in Detroit in 2022.  This production features a newly revised, layered, jazz-inflected score and a potent new staging that imagines Malcolm as an Everyman whose story transcends time and space.  Read more about the opera here.

We'll meet in the lobby of the Theatre by 9:30 AM to give everyone time to get any refreshments and get settled before the show begins at 9:55 AM.  The opera will run three hours and twenty-five minutes with two intermissions.

After the opera, those interested can join us at a Pa'ina, a casual Hawaiian restaurant next door to the theater, for lunch (deposit required).

Opera Details:
X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X  sketches an outline of Malcolm X's life: including the murder of Malcolm’s father when Malcolm is a boy in Lansing, Mich.; falling in with a fast crowd in Boston and ending up in prison; his jailhouse conversion to Islam; the success of his Black nationalist ministry; his rift with Elijah Muhammad of the Nation of Islam over tactics; his pilgrimage to Mecca; the glimmers of a more universalist ideology of peace and racial unity; and his assassination in 1965, at just 39.

With its realistic retelling of recent history, its depiction of a controversial public figure, and its all-Black team of creators, X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X broke new ground and pushed the boundaries of the art form, paving the way for dozens of subsequent works that brought present-day issues to the operatic stage.

The Metropolitan Opera's production of X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X is produced by theater luminary and Tony-nominated director of Slave Play Robert O’Hara.  An exceptional cast of breakout artists and young Met stars enliven the operatic retelling of the civil rights leader’s life. Baritone Will Liverman, who triumphed in the Met premiere of Fire Shut Up in My Bones, sings Malcolm X, alongside soprano Leah Hawkins as his mother, Louise; mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis as his sister Ella; bass-baritone Michael Sumuel as his brother Reginald; and tenor Victor Ryan Robertson as Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Kazem Abdullah conducts.
