Join MAX for The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD theater broadcast of the George Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. The opera will be simulcast to the Century Theatre in in the Westfield San Francisco Centre on Saturday, February 1st, starting at 9:55 AM.
Porgy and Bess is an English-language opera filled with an embarrassment of rich melodies from the American songbook. The songs just roll out one after another as this tragic love triangle plays out in the Catfish Row section of Charleston. The story follows the attempts of a crippled street beggar to rescue Bess from Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and from Sportin' Life, her Happy Dust dealer.
Among the songs included in Porgy and Bess are:
- A Woman Is a Sometime Thing
- My Man's Gone Now
- I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'
- Bess, You Is My Woman Now
- Oh, I Can't Sit Down!
- It Ain't Necessarily So
- I Loves You, Porgy
- A Red Headed Woman
